Let The Sunshine All Day (5/17/18)
“Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: Sun, stand still over Gibeon; And Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still, And the moon stopped, Till the people had revenge Upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day.” (Joshua 10:12-13)
Here are some words from a song written decades ago and is now in public domain, “Open Up You Hearts and Let The Sunshine In:” “My mother told me something that everyone should know. It’s all about the devil and I learned to hate him so. She said he causes trouble when you let him in the room. He will never leave you if your heart is filled with gloom. So let the sunshine in, face it with a grin. Smilers never lose and frowners never win. So let the sunshine in, patient with a grin. Open up your heart and let the sunshine in.” Some of you are old enough to remember that as kindergarteners we sang this song early in the morning. Our voices were not vociferous. They were not overflowing with enthusiasm at the start of the song. I personally believe that our little bodies were still entrapped in the slumbering numbness that comes with nighttime sleep. Then something happened! It seems our little mouths sent out a distress signal to our lungs so they would wake up and resuscitate our voices so they could resonate at a level that made our teacher proud. Our lungs cooperated, coordinated with both our mouths and our emotions as we sang “Let the sunshine in!” It was as if we were now singing a rehearsed rendition as we released our voices to the level where higher decibels reside. It seems like we were freed to escalate to a point of excitement! Our sleepy heads were transformed to awakened minds, preparing to digest the educational menu for the day! We sang the very same song in Sunday School, so much so that it became mere ritual and mandated rhetoric. For many of us did not see any connection with the Psalmist’s words, “The Lord is my light and my salvation.” No thoughts entered our mind about light overcoming darkness; most of us did not recall from any translation of scripture the words written in John’s gospel, “The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has never put it out.” No, we just sang, “Let the sunshine in” as a prerequisite for being taught by our Sunday School teacher. That was them, back in the yesterdays, but now is today. Even in the yesteryears, centuries ago, Joshua prayed and God held back the night to allow time to win the battle. That was yesteryear, but now is today. So today, in our time, right now, we are going to start praying, yes, both you and me; praying that the Lord will hold back the “nighttimes” in our lives and let the daylight of our joy in Him prevail; let the daytime of our assurance that we are going to make it through whatever we face; let the sunshine that comes with His strength help us overcome every dark situation that tries swathe our demeanor! We are going to pray that by letting the sunshine in, our day will be one of rejoicing and celebration of what God has done and shall do…all day long! Whatever type of nighttime that is trying to occupy your day and steal your sunshine away, we pray that the Lord will flood your soul with spiritual, heaven-sent sunshine; smile on you and restrain the darkness all day long!
“May the light of the Lord's face be shining on you in grace” (Numbers 6:25 BBE)
Still committed to the climb,
Mark L. King
